Management is often misunderstood as avoidance or giving in. In reality, management is one of the most compassionate tools we have when supporting a dog with separation challenges.
Management means adjusting the environment and routine so that your dog is not repeatedly pushed into panic. This might involve reducing alone time, arranging company, working with a dog walker, or setting up safe spaces where your dog feels more secure.
A dog who is constantly overwhelmed cannot learn new skills. Their nervous system is too busy trying to cope. Management creates breathing room, allowing stress levels to come down so learning can begin.
Think of management as scaffolding. It supports the structure while the foundations are being built. Over time, as your dog gains confidence, those supports can be gently adjusted.
Choosing management is not a failure. It is an act of care, patience, and responsibility.
All the best,
Victoria
